My name is Rebecca. I have started a ‘Centre’ to help individuals' ‘Senses’ in an inclusive environment in Stratford Upon Avon.
I am a practitioner providing therapies for children and adults with learning, behavioural, sensory or emotional difficulties to improve their performance or wellbeing and reduce possible triggers that may be at the root of their difficulties.
The therapies and my work with the client are tailored to the individual. We focus our aim on treating the whole person rather than being led by any label that may have been attached to the individual's difficulties.
I have trained in a London centre that has been providing these therapies, with great success, to individuals for nearly 30 years.
I am passionate about bringing support for the neuro diverse or those with emotional and behavioural difficulties that often lead to negative outcomes or poor mental health.
Why are these difficulties on the increase in children and adults? There is not one answer, individuals have their own history and views on why there are who they are, I respect that.
Can we help children & adults with difficulties? I believe we can.
Why do I belive this? I have first hand experiance of the positive benefits sound, light and movement therapies brought for myself and my children. More in 'The story of Centre Senses'.
I have a wonderful child who has had significant difficulties evident from the toddler stage, diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder, ASD, ADHD and possible Dyspraxia. Unfortunately their difficulties were a significant and long term barrier to attending full time school.
After many years of little support (outside school) with sensory issues, school refusal, part time school, alternative placement, then 3 exclusions within 6 months I was looking for anything that could help their situation. I needed to be on call to attend to my child 24/7.
I could not and would not believe that with the growing number of individuals being recognised with learning or behavioural difficulties there was so little practical help and support out there to assist them, to improve or overcome their problems.
Research lead me to sound and light therapies. Positive testimonials on both clinics offering therapies and independant sites from individuals and families that had benefited were really promising. I took my child to a centre in London for 10 days.
After 10 days the results were astonishing and I knew I wanted to become a practitioner to help others in the same way.
With very sensitive hearing my child always chose to wear ear defenders. Even with these they were unable to stay in assemblies, singing classes, parties, supermarkets (and more) without sensory overload (not just hearing) usually triggering a meltdown.
After therapies they, and the family now enjoy the theatre, cinema and west end musicals. My child now declines offers of ear defenders while they watch, enjoy and actively participate in the shows.
They are able to visit places that would have created significant stress behaviours previously including supermarkets, leisure centres, shopping centres, parties and amusement parks.
We as a family enjoy more time outside and the number of bumps or falls while out has noticeably reduced. I’m not saying they have had any sort of miraculous cure, we know that is not the case, but there has been significant improvements that has enabled them to grow further as a person.
My child has noticeably benefited educationally, emotionally and with greater sensory resillience from therapies undertaken.
I was told my child's needs were too great to attend mainstream school and the Local Authority placed them in the 'high needs' category, providing funding for a specialist setting. Unbelievably whilst the Local Authority were going through this process and a school place agreed; my child (having had therapies) was actively attending their full time mainstream school, not just attending school but actually being in the classroom and participating in learning!
They now enjoy assemblies, school trips and music lessons, and are part of a four piece band. They are able to socialise and talk with family and peers much much more as are able to to be in our world most of the time, not their previous world with the need to block out sounds, movements, lights or other sensory distractions.
They are enjoying PE and going out into the playground for breaks, previously something we and professionals felt would alway need to be avoided. After treatment they started to read more and started to choose to write and draw. Previously there was great reluctance due to constant headaches when looking at a book or paper for any period of time.
There are noticeable improvements both educationally and socially which in turn has boosted their self esteem and wellbeing, helping them to reach their future potential in leaps and bounds!
Undertaking the therapies have been a huge benefit to the whole family, the call on my time as a carer has reduced. We are able to undertake more family activities without the previous barriers and with significantly less behavioural or emotional issues.
I was able to recognise sensitivities in my youngest child earlier and they too, though they did not have the same level of difficulties, have noticeably benefited educational and emotional from therapies.
Due to the results I have seen in my children as well as other individuals at the centre coupled with the lack of purposeful therapies to help those with difficulties in Warwickshire I have trained in the therapies and started ‘Centre Senses’.
I hope to meet many individuals and families who can benefit from the therapies as I continue on my professional, personal and family journey.
To my children ... I love you for all who you are ❤
